Insulation types and sizes

What are R-values?

R-value is basically the measurement in terms of thickness that determines sizing for types of insulation. For example, an R6.0 is thicker than R5.0. Residential insulation

For existing and new developments, there are only two types of sizes that are applicable, 430mm and 580mm in width. This measurement is universal across all residential insulation brands.

Types:

There is a variety of insulation for different types of application. These include:

Wall insulation:
This is the smallest range that insulation comes in because house walls can only be so thick. It provides sufficient warmth and sound protection within your walls.

Acoustic insulation:
Is designed to protect the walls of your home from sound escaping in desired rooms. Knauf’s Earthwool call this product SoundShield whereas Flecther’s Pink Batts call it Soundbreak. This particular product can be specified by the terminology HD (which means high density) and SHD (meaning super high density). Acoustic insulation provides exceptional sound protection from room to room within your home.

Underfloor insulation:

Ceiling insulation:
Has the largest range and is the thickest form an insulation batt comes in. It is purely designed this thick as the most amount of air within a home escapes through the roof so by adding a cloud of thick insulation will not only keep you warm in winter but protect you from the elements outside in summer too!
